Tryst with Instructional Designing

There is so much that I have read for the past few days about instructional designing that now I dream of ID. I know you would want to know about why I went about cramming loads of information. So here's my story for all those who want to hear

I am a corporate trainer with over 9 years of experience in the field. Some where along the line I started writing content for training and creating training programs. Until a few days back I thought that the practical knowledge I acquired over these years was enough for me to claim that I was fit to be both a trainer and Instructional Designer. In short I was to full of myself. Little did I know that this bubble was soon to be burst. It happened, and at the cost of me loosing an excellent job opportunity.

I applied for the post of AVP (Asst. Vice President) training, the organization a reputed BPO. They wanted a person who could manage Asst Mangers and managers from the Instructional designing department. My resume did not fail to impress the interviewer and I got a prompt reply. The first interview went well and I thought things were moving in the right direction. However the second interview was my eye opener. I was asked a lot of questions about developing training content and Instructional material. As always I thought I did a splendid job explaining how I went about doing my job.
At the end I asked the interviewer, who would have been my boss had I got the job, on how he thought the interview went. A nice man that he was, he wanted to be extremely candid and said that though I had a lot of experience in training and management I lacked the desired knowledge in instructional designing.

God!!!! All I wanted to do then was flush my head somewhere.Well the interviewer was sweet enough to relieve me of my embarrassment but dint forget to explain in detail what he meant. With all hopes to get the job down the drain I resolved to find out what went wrong and decided to serch on google for my answers. Before I continue would want to acknowledge GOOGLE for being such an amazing search engine.

I found my answers in the multitudes of articles and blogs written on the net ,never realizing my perspective would change entirely. The result is now I plan to take up a professional course in Instructional designing and my resolve was strengthened by a series of posts written by Christy Tucker.

Thank you christy. Also for all those trainers who find themselves in the same soup i have decided to put all the knowledge that I gained by reading into a post. So please keep reading.

I'm sorry that your job opportunity didn't work out like you'd hoped, but it sounds like you are taking a very positive attitude towards getting the skills you need to do ID.

Good luck with your ID course, and I hope you do share what you learn here on your blog.
